Saturday, May 8

Division 1 Quarterfinals
St. Johns and Cedar Park led off the games on the turf field, and Cedar Park did a good job of keeping up with the Mavericks through the first half, trailing only 12-8. The Mavericks opened things up in second half though, and eventually cruised to a 22-11 victory.
In the other quarterfinal game, host school ESD knocked off St. Andrews 22-15.

Division 2 Quarterfinals
In Division 2 quarterfinals, Lamar took care of business against Georgetown, rolling to a19-8 victory that was never in doubt. Southlake Carroll did the same against Austin St. Michaels.

Division 1 Semifinals
The D1 semifinals proved to be full of great lacrosse action. In D1, Hockaday and St. Johns, who were denied a matchup in SPC championship for second year in a row after Episcopal played the spoiler roll yet again, finally got their long awaited game, and it was a doozy. The Mavericks led 9-6 late in the game before seeing the Daisies of Hockaday come back with two goals of their own to make things very interesting! The clock finally ran out to send the Mavs on to the final. In the other semifinal, a pesky ESD hung with Cyfair through the first half and into the second, before the talented Maidens put on a clinic and pulled away for an 18-8 win, which put them back in the state championship game for the first time since 2007.

Division 2 Semifinals
New kid on the block St. Agnes and Southlake put on a great show that went down to the wire! St. Agnes jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, only to see Southlake put on a spurt of their own to eventually go up 8-6, and then 11-8. But the Tigers held tough and went on a run of their own to tie things up. After that, the teams traded goals before the Tigers were able to take the lead with over 2 minutes left. They then got the next draw and then effectively ran down the clock enough that the Dragons couldn't do anything with the ball after getting it back with just 10 seconds left.
In the other semifinal, Lamar had a tough game with top seeded Coppell, and ran out of gas late and thus unable to set up an all-south district final in both d1 and d2. Nevertheless, it was a good season for Lamar!

All Star Games
The last events of the first day were the always-fun-filled all-star games. Congrats to all the All-Stars for great seasons and the honor of being selected.

Sunday May 10

Mother's Day brought cloudy, cool weather (compared to yesterday's beautiful sunny clear yet not-hot day), and St. Agnes Tigers and Coppell Cowgirls started things off by playing for the D2 championship. Both teams spent the first half trading goals back and forth in spurts, with Coppell getting things going first before the Tigers answered back, with Audrey Lee coming through time and again to put points on the board. Alas, Coppell pulled away in the second half to win their first state championship. Still, it was a great season and showing for St. Agnes in just their first year ever, and we congratulate them for a job well done!

Then came the long awaited rematch between the top seeded and previously unbeaten Cyfair IronMaidens, and St. Johns. The Mavericks scored first, but the Maidens quickly answered back with a couple of their own, and showing great poise on offense and some downright excellent defense to make things tough for St. Johns in the early going. However the Mavericks were able to regroup and tie things up. The teams then traded goals for a while, with each team coming up with great displays of offense to top the other, before the Mavs put in two goals late in first half to take a 7-5 halftime lead.

In the second half, the teams traded goals, and it seemed that the game would then be a race to see who would be ahead between these two great juggernauts when time ran out, but the Mavs then clamped down defensively, with goalie Kelsey Duncombe-Smith coming up with block after block to hold the Maidens scoreless the rest of the way. Meanwhile the St. Johns offense was able to put some points on the board and pull away for an 11-6 win. Congrats to both teams for a great season, and for representing the south district well!

Congrats to the South District All State team!
